To The Citizens Of Heaven
About This Series:
Many Christians today look to the book of Acts for guidelines on church life and function. The truth is a better model is found in Philippians. Paul writes to Philippian believers with an affection rarely seen in his other letters, and even from his opening lines it is apparent that there is something drastically different about this body of believers. So what exactly set them apart? In this series of messages, Stephen Davey explores why the church in Philippi was a model in the first century . . . and why they remain a model for us today.
1 - Introducing the Church in Philippi
(Philippians 1:1) The Book of Philippians is an extraordinary letter to an extraordinary church. Stephen gives us an invaluable look behind the scenes as he begins his brand new series, "To the Citizens of Heaven."
2 - The Meaning of Life
(Philippians 1:1) There is a world of meaning in the title Paul uses for himself in his opening words to the Philippian church. In fact, it takes us to the very meaning of life itself.
3 - More Than a Whisper of Treason
(Philippians 1:1) At the time Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians, there was one lord in the land: Caesar. His gospel of Roman supremacy was being spread throughout the world through conquest, and to disavow his sovereignty was nothing less than treason. Stephen brings us the gripping reminder that Paul's letter to the Philippians was as treacherous as it is timeless.
4 - Not Just an Ordinary Hello
Philippians 1:2) Paul writes to these Philippian believers with an affection rarely seen in his other letters, and even from his opening lines it is apparent that there is something drastically different about them. Stephen gives us insight into what set them apart.
5 - A Recipe for Joy
(Philippians 1:3–7) The Philippian believers understood a fundamental truth that many today have forgotten: joy is a product of grace . . . not of circumstance.
6 - All We Need is (Real) Love
(Philippians 1:8–9) That’s the prayer Paul is praying for them . . . and for you and me. To overflow in love; to progress in learning the biblical truth about love and life; to practice applying what we’re learning. To put it more simply – Paul is fervently praying, “Lord . . . teach them how to love; teach them what they need to know; so they can know how they ought to live. With love . . . knowledge and insight . . . living ultimately with more to Thee oh Christ, more love to Thee.
7 - Tested, True and Triumphant
(Philippians 1:10–11) If Paul was reading the settings from where he sat in Rome, chained to guards and under house arrest, he would never have ended his prayer list in this manner – with a note of triumphant joy.
