Passing the Test

John 18:23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”

Here in John 18, Jesus is dragged before priests who are supposed to embody the role of shepherd but who, instead, play the role of inquisitor. In His response, our Lord gives us a practical paradigm for evaluating truth from error. He effectively says that if we cannot demonstrate that something is false, we shouldn’t condemn it as false, because we may be standing against the truth. These priests here have devoted their very lives to studying the Old Testament Scriptures and are more acquainted with them than anyone else, yet they still miss the most essential Truth of all: God in their very midst.

So be careful today, friend. Do not rely on your own knowledge when testing truth from error, but, in humility, rely totally on the Spirit of God.

Extra Refreshment

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. … By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:1a & 6b
