Paper-Thin
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Isn’t it tragic how the further away we get from God, the more upside-down life becomes? I recently read Friedrich Nietzsche’s Twilight of the Idols where he relays his infamous ‘transvaluation of values,’ arguing for the replacement of Christian virtues with their exact opposites. Effectively, where Christ says, “deny yourself,” Nietzsche says, “please yourself.” And where Christ says, “Come to me and I will give you rest,” Nietzsche says, “leave Christ behind and you’ll have rest.” Tragically, this reverse-psychological idea, this inversion of morality and immorality, is as rampant today as it’s ever been. Many confused souls are drinking from this poisoned well of words, thinking it will give them the peace they crave, but in the end their lives turn out the same as Nietzsche’s: crazed, embittered, and full of darkness.
Christian, our world today is filled with dumb idols, but there’s still only one Christ. And unlike the rhetoric of hell that only shines on paper, Heaven’s Word shines where it matters most: in practice.
