Let’s be Clear

Isaiah 19:14

The LORD has mingled within her a spirit of confusion, and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

If you’ve ever seen a drunk man fumbling along a city street, you’ve noticed how every step he takes gives away his condition, right? That’s why this biblical metaphor for foolishness is so apt. A foolish man can’t live a moral life any more than a drunk man can walk in a straight line. So when Paul writes in 1 Timothy 1:7 that a Christian’s spirit is marked by ‘power and love and self-control,’ and when David describes the godly man in Psalm 1 as a flourishing, fruit-bearing tree planted by the river, that’s a vivid reminder that when we choose to follow our own course rather than remain grounded in God’s Word, we stagger aimlessly with no sure footing, no fertile soil, and no fountain of life to sustain us.

So Christian, stand firm today in your staggering world. Grounded in the love of Christ, rooted in the promises of Christ, and sustained by the Spirit of Christ, you can walk through these next twenty-four hours with clarity of vision and purity of focus.
