God Breathed

Isaiah 2:22

“Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?”

Is there a sharper, more fitting picture for our generation today than this? Friend, I’m so deeply sorry if you’ve lost someone you love to COVID-19, and if you haven’t, I’m sure you know someone who has. But it strikes me that what this pandemic has revealed is the utter helplessness of our human condition. We literally live from breath to breath, and life is so fragile. The Nebuchadnezzars of the world may look powerful on their balconies in their hanging gardens; their portraits may look statuesque on the cover of Time Magazine; their voices may thunder from television screens and Wall Street journals; but see them get rushed into an emergency room on a ventilator and Isaiah’s words will ring loud and clear. Man isn’t something to be feared; he’s something to be pitied.

Think of it, Christian: the world is like a spiritual emergency room, filled to the brim with suffocating souls in desperate need of the life redeeming breath of God. So what are you afraid of? Take a deep breath, drink in the love of the Lord, and go and share His gospel with someone else.
