A Call and a Coronation

John 21:17b-18 Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

This remarkable exchange between our Lord and Peter is a special coronation of sorts, like the time Samuel anointed David’s head as the new king, or the time God bestowed on Abram a brand new name. Remember, this is the same Peter who cut off a soldier’s ear and who pulled Jesus aside to rebuke Him for speaking of death. But that was before. Jesus effectively places His hand on the shoulder of this act-first-apologize-later, heart-on-the-sleeve disciple and says, “Peter, your days of fighting and cursing and denying are over; rise now, take my mantle, and be a shepherd after My own heart.”

Friend, that coronation is yours as well. Will you live up to the call in your love today?

Extra Refreshment

“And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Jeremiah 3:15
