Peace

by Scott Wylie

Peace goes beyond the absence of conflict and refers to a deep sense of tranquility, harmony, and wholeness that can only be found through a relationship with God. The Bible portrays peace as a gift from God, a result of His grace, and a fruit of the Spirit that believers are encouraged to cultivate in their lives.

What is Peace?

One of the most well-known passages on peace is found in the book of Isaiah, where the prophet describes the coming Messiah, saying, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6, ESV). This verse highlights Jesus Christ as the ultimate source of peace, offering peace not only in a worldly sense but also peace with God and inner peace.

Jesus Himself promises peace to His disciples in John 14:27, saying, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" (John 14:27, ESV). This verse reassures believers that they can experience a peace that surpasses worldly understanding, a peace that guards their hearts and minds in all circumstances.

Cultivate Peace

So, how can we develop the biblical quality of peace in our own lives? Here are a few tips:

  1. Seek peace with God: The foundation of true peace is reconciliation with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 says, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

  2. Surrender to God's sovereignty: Trust in God's control over all things and surrender your anxieties, worries, and burdens to Him. Philippians 4:6-7 assures us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

  3. Meditate on God's Word: Fill your mind with the truths and promises found in Scripture. Psalm 119:165 says, "Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble."

  4. Cultivate a heart of forgiveness: Embrace a spirit of forgiveness, letting go of bitterness and resentment. Colossians 3:13 encourages us, "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

  5. Practice gratitude: Develop a habit of gratitude, focusing on the blessings and goodness of God. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 advises, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

  6. Foster healthy relationships: Seek to live in harmony with others, resolving conflicts and pursuing reconciliation. Romans 12:18 reminds us, "If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all."

  7. Choose peaceful and edifying communication: Use your words to build up and encourage others, promoting peace in your interactions. Proverbs 15:1 says, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

  8. Practice self-control: Cultivate self-discipline and self-control, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, words, and actions. Galatians 5:22-23 mentions self-control as one of the fruits of the Spirit, which leads to inner peace and harmony.

  9. Trust in God's provision: Rely on God's faithfulness and provision in every aspect of your life. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:31-33, "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

  10. Pray for peace: Bring your worries, fears, and anxieties to God in prayer. Philippians 4:6 encourages us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."

Peace is a profound and transformative quality that comes from a relationship with God. By seeking peace with God, surrendering to His sovereignty, meditating on His Word, cultivating forgiveness and gratitude, fostering healthy relationships, practicing peaceful communication, exercising self-control, trusting in God's provision, and praying for peace, we can develop and experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. May we continually pursue this biblical characteristic, allowing it to shape our hearts, minds, and relationships, and may the peace of God reign in every aspect of our lives.
