Guidance

by Scott Wylie

The biblical characteristic of guidance speaks to the divine direction and wisdom that God offers to those who seek His will. Throughout the Bible, God is depicted as a guiding light, leading His people through the complexities of life. Whether it's major life decisions or daily choices, seeking and recognizing God's guidance is essential for a life aligned with His purposes.

What is Guidance?

In the book of Psalms, King David often turned to God for guidance, recognizing that human wisdom was limited compared to God's omniscience. Psalm 32:8 beautifully captures this sentiment, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm 32:8, ESV). This verse underscores God's promise to guide and counsel His people in their journey.

Receiving and recognizing God's guidance requires a heart that is attuned to His voice and a willingness to follow His leading.

Cultivate God's Guidance

Here are some tips for seeking and recognizing God's guidance:

  1. Prayerful Attitude: Begin with an attitude of prayer and surrender. Approach decisions with the mindset that you want God's will above your own. James 1:5 encourages, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

  2. Seek God's Word: The Bible is a rich source of wisdom and guidance. Regularly read and meditate on Scripture to align your thoughts with God's principles. Psalm 119:105 affirms, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

  3. Listen to the Holy Spirit: Be attentive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit within you. Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide believers into all truth (John 16:13).

  4. Seek Counsel: Seek advice from wise and godly individuals, seeking insights from those who are grounded in their faith. Proverbs 11:14 advises, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors, there is safety."

  5. Inner Peace: Pay attention to the sense of peace that comes when a decision aligns with God's will. Colossians 3:15 encourages, "And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful."

  6. Open and Closed Doors: Be sensitive to open and closed doors in your circumstances. Sometimes God's guidance is evident through opportunities that align with His plan.

  7. Wait Patiently: Patience is key in discerning God's timing and guidance. Psalm 27:14 reminds us, "Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!"

  8. Avoid Self-Reliance: Rely on God's guidance rather than leaning solely on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding."

  9. Learn from Past Experiences: Reflect on times when God has guided you in the past. This can serve as a reminder of His faithfulness and direction.

  10. Stay Humble: Approach guidance with humility, recognizing that God's ways are higher than ours. Isaiah 55:9 reminds us, "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Seeking and recognizing God's guidance is a journey of faith, prayer, and discernment. By maintaining a prayerful attitude, seeking God's Word, listening to the Holy Spirit, seeking counsel, recognizing inner peace, observing open and closed doors, waiting patiently, avoiding self-reliance, learning from past experiences, and staying humble, we can actively cultivate the biblical characteristic of guidance in our lives. May we continually seek God's direction and trust His leading in all areas of our journey.
