Through the Waters
Isaiah 43:2
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
Sometimes it’s a fire and sometimes a flood. Sometimes it’s a car tire stuck in the mud. Sometimes its oppression that leads to despair; or just the perception that God isn’t there. Sometimes it’s a cancer and sometimes a flu; sometimes it’s an answer that never comes through. Sometimes it’s an ocean you can’t seem to cross, or simply the notion that hope has been lost. Sometimes it’s a question that burns in your head; sometimes its depression that keeps you in bed. Sometimes it’s a terrible, devilish lie; sometimes the unbearable pain of ‘goodbye.’ Sometimes it’s a Nero with voice full of hate. Sometimes it’s a hero who shows up too late. Sometimes it’s the violence of rioting crowds; sometimes it’s the silence that’s hellishly loud. Sometimes it’s the lightning, the thunder, the wind; sometimes it’s a frightening word from a friend.
But when the smoke rises, and when the sea roars, and fears rage inside us and beat at the door. Oh cling to our Maker—our Refuge—our Friend! His promise will anchor our souls to the end.
