Genesis 34:25

Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and came against the city while it felt secure and killed all the males.

Simeon and Levi’s brutal killing spree could be a blockbuster film today, couldn’t it? In fact, it’s the same sort of gory revenge story that keeps getting remade by the entertainment industry over and over again. Give Tarantino this script and I bet he’d come back with a blood-bath thriller worthy of an Oscar. But this isn’t entertainment, friend; its tragedy. Our Lord taught us clearly that “he who lives by the sword dies by the sword,” and, in the real world, no one takes justice into his own hands without getting sullied by it. Simeon and Levi’s deed will leave heavy collateral damage on their society and it will horribly sear their own conscience. Now that their hands are stained with innocent blood, now that they’ve got the feel for murder, it won’t be long before they grab their younger brother, throw him into a pit, and leave him there to die.

Wouldn’t it be something if vengeful action-films ended with a silent panorama of all the crashed cars and sunken homes and dying victims left behind? I wonder how that would go at the box office.
