As a teenager, I spent one summer working in a cabinetry warehouse to the ambience of beeping fork-lifts and buzzing electric drills and pounding nail-guns, and it was no easy task. But I learned something valuable. I remember a buff guy named Tommy with tattoos all over his arms and a motorcycle out back teaching me how to ‘fake work’: how to grab a drill and stick my head into an unfinished cabinet whenever the boss walked by; but I also remember a bi-vocational pastor named Steve working with a smile on his face and reading his Bible during our short lunch breaks. He didn’t have tattoos on his arms or a hog out back, but he was tough as nails. And I noticed two things from watching him work: that the Lord was with him, and that the boss trusted him. And the cabinets he built were solid— just like him.
