Searching for Saul

John 7:24 “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Do you remember way back in Israel’s history when the Jewish people begged God for a king so that they could resemble other nations? The people chose Saul since he was very tall and stately in appearance. But God spoke those powerful words to Samuel in 1 Samuel 16:7 that Jesus reflects back on in John 7:24: “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Here, years later, this God-incarnate Heir to Israel’s throne stands before His own people as King of kings and Lord of lords but they reject Him. Effectively, they say, “Sorry Jesus! You’re not the kind of king we’re looking for; you don’t really fit the bill.” Tragically, appearances ruled the day in the first century and nothing’s changed after two thousand years.

The eyes of the majority are still skin-deep. Are yours?
