Can I Have a Word?

Isaiah 55:10-11a
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, … so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty…”

We toss around so many words from day to day that we rarely notice just how potent this mysterious phenomenon called speech really is. Prophets use words to give divine directives. Kings use words to bend masses to their will. Poets use words to join with nature. Generals use words to command armies. Lovers use words to delight their beloved. And on and on. But notice how Isaiah juxtaposes the power of God’s words against our own. Our words often die out like seeds on a rock or embers in the wind, with nothing to show for them, but God’s are always generative. When He says, “I forgive,” souls are reborn in that breath. When He says, “I will,” paths are blazed in that instant. When He says “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” Heaven’s gates are opened wide forever.

Christian, God’s words are sowing a harvest in your heart even as you read this, so just wait: you’ll see the fruit in time.
