Genesis 35:3

“… so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.”

Those big, theological conundrums like ‘how can a loving God allow evil in the world?’ or ‘why doesn’t God bring an end to suffering now?’ can take our faith by storm, but, more often than not, it’s the personal dilemmas of daily life that provide the harder tests. Does God want me to adopt that child? Does God want me to quit my job and go to seminary? Does God want me to care for my mother-in-law or put her in a care home? Does God want me to call that friend and make amends? No doubt Jacob’s endured plenty of sleepless nights. No doubt he’s still got plenty of unanswered questions filling his mind. But amidst the uncertainty, he centers his heart on the most central truth of all and effectively says to his family, “God is my ever present help in times of trouble; I know He’ll be with me even to the end.”

Friend, rest all your perplexities in the presence of your Father today. He’s right here, right now, right where He’s always been!
