A City Blinded

Genesis 19:11

And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door.

The exchange between Lot and this shameless mob of Sodomites is one of those grueling Old Testament displays of human depravity that’s hard to stomach, and I was about to skip over the scene entirely until verse eleven stopped me in my tracks. Read the lines again, friend, and notice how they serve as an overarching description of life without Christ. The hopeless expressions, the countless addictions: we’ve seen it far too often in our own communities, haven’t we? Souls becoming blinded by their sin, toiling from impulse to impulse, from vanity to vanity, from drug to drug, from selfish ambition to selfish ambition, groping in the darkness for some meaning, some substance, some door they can’t seem to find. Even though He’s been right in front of them the whole time.

Christian, remember: the light of Christ in you today, shining through your words, through your mercy, through your justice, through your gratitude, is sight for blind eyes and rest for weary hearts and a key to the Kingdom. So keep shining! A little light can go a long way in a place like Sodom.
