If Only
If Only
Genesis 39:12
She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.
Like a running back who fumbles the ball in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, we all have those ‘if only’ moments in life we wish we could do over, don’t we? If only I hadn’t read that text message while driving down the highway. If only I’d apologized to that friend. If only I hadn’t skipped that class in college. If only I’d gone to bed instead of that party. Now, I know Joseph’s done nothing morally wrong here, but this is still a fumble for his reputation and career. Within hours, he’ll find himself in one of the darkest dungeons in Egypt, and I can only imagine how he must replay this scenario over and over again in his mind. For years in Potiphar’s household, he’d been so careful, so meticulous, so above reproach, but one little moment of pure-hearted absent-mindedness throws out all his hard work. And all because of a stupid cloak!
Friend, for the sake of integrity, flee sin as fast as you can today. And for the sake of reputation, don’t leave anything behind!
