Refusing to be Pig-Headed People
Learning how true love replaces envy, pride, and arrogance.
What does it really mean to love others well? In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul gives a definition of love that is both practical and challenging. In this episode, Stephen Davey focuses on three negative qualities that love avoids: jealousy, boasting, and arrogance. True love, Paul writes, doesn’t burn with envy over what others have, doesn’t brag about its own accomplishments, and doesn’t strut around with an inflated sense of self-importance.
Through biblical examples and real-life application, Stephen explains how envy robs us of joy, boasting reveals our emptiness, and arrogance blinds us to truth. From the jealousy of Joseph’s brothers to the pride of the Pharisees, Scripture shows how destructive these attitudes can be. But Paul points us toward a better way—living with humility and contentment in what God has given.
Stephen also reminds us that envy and arrogance are not just struggles of the unbelieving world. Christians, too, can fall into comparison, boasting, and pride. The call of biblical love is to refuse pig-headedness and instead become big-hearted servants.
This message will encourage you to examine your own heart, recognize the subtle ways jealousy and pride may show up, and embrace humility as the true mark of Christlike love.
