About This Series:

This 12-part sermon series, Humility from Philippians 2, examines the vanishing virtue of humility and what it means for Christians today. The series opens by looking at how pride has permeated culture and the church. It explores the supernatural realities of encouragement in Christ, the consolation of love, fellowship of the Spirit, and affection and compassion that should be experienced by every Christian. Listeners will be challenged to examine how they can demonstrate these virtues in their own lives. The series then turns to the example of Jesus, who, though equal to God, emptied himself, taking the form of a bondservant and humbling himself to the point of death, even death on a cross. The series emphasizes that this is how Christians are called to live: to voluntarily surrender our rights for the sake of others and for the glory of God.

The series then examines the paradox of working out your salvation with fear and trembling, knowing that it is God who is at work in you. Listeners will be encouraged to stay alert to the tendency to stray, stay the course despite the temptation to stall, stay fearfully respectful in God’s presence rather than strutting, and stay grateful that God works in and through us, resisting the urge to steal His glory. The series will also address the dangers of a complaining spirit and remind listeners that they are lights in the world, called to hold out the word of life. Listeners will be challenged to shine their light by demonstrating a spirit of humility and joy and be encouraged by the truth that living without regret means enabling the accomplishments of others for the glory of God and longing for the applause of Christ. The series concludes with an exhortation to live a life committed to integrity and purity, a life that holds onto and holds out to others the word of life – a life with no reserves, no retreats, and no regrets.

Sermons In This Series

What does it take to truly master humility? In this engaging sermon, you'll hear a relatable story about trying to ride a mechanical bull, and learn how it serves as a metaphor for our struggles with pride. Stephen Davey unpacks why humility is a vanishing virtue in our culture and what we can do about it.

2 - (Philippians 2:2–4) An Unnatural Way to Live

Why is humility so difficult to achieve? In today's message, we'll explore the surprising reasons why the pursuit of self-importance has led us away from true unity, and why real humility is increasingly rare in our culture. Discover how the Apostle Paul's teachings reveal that true humility isn't just about thinking less of ourselves—it's about learning to forget ourselves entirely and serve others with Christ-like love.

3 - (Philippians 2:5–8) A Mount Everest of Truth

Do you ever wonder what true humility looks like? What does it mean to give up your rights for someone else, even when you don't have to? In today’s sermon, we explore the ultimate example of humility—the story of Jesus Christ—and how He chose to surrender His divine rights for the sake of humanity. You’ll hear about our society’s obsession with personal rights and entitlement, but more importantly, you’ll see how Christ's humility stands in stark contrast to that mindset, offering a compelling call to live selflessly.

4 - (Philippians 2:7–8) Crushing the "Kingdom of Me"

How often do you fight for your own rights or feel the urge to vindicate yourself? Today, we'll examine how the "kingdom of me" mentality can blind us to the humility that Jesus modeled so perfectly. Jesus Christ gave up His rights and embraced servanthood—not because He had to, but because of His deep love for us. This message will invite you to let go of the "kingdom of me" and embrace the humility and selflessness exemplified by Christ.

5 - (Philippians 2:8) The Sovereign Became a Slave

Why would someone choose powerlessness? Our world celebrates power, wealth, and fame. Lists of the "most powerful" and "richest" dominate the media, and it seems unimaginable that anyone would willingly give up such privilege. Yet there is Someone who chose to become powerless for the sake of others. This message is about Jesus Christ, who surrendered His rights and status to serve humanity, demonstrating an unmatched level of humility. As we explore this ancient hymn in Philippians, you'll discover the depths of Christ's humility and the significance of what He gave up—not for Himself, but for us.

6 - (Philippians 2:9–11) Jesus Is God

7 - (Philippians 2:12–13) The Truth About Our Tendencies

How do you balance God's power and your responsibility? Does spiritual growth rest solely on you, or is it all God's doing? Today’s message dives into one of the most profound paradoxes in the Christian faith—your spiritual growth is both entirely dependent on God and yet fully requires your effort. Dive into the book of Philippians with us to explore this beautiful tension.

8 - (Philippians 2:14–15) Leaving the State of Discontent

10 - (Philippians 2:19–22) Satisfied with Second Place

Are you someone who prefers to stay in the background, supporting others while they shine? Or maybe you wonder if the unnoticed work you do really matters? In today's message, we dive into the story of Timothy, a young man who played a crucial yet often understated role in the early church. You'll discover how humility, devotion, and the willingness to serve without recognition became Timothy's defining traits, and how those same qualities can bring purpose and joy to your own journey of faith.

11 - (Philippians 2:19) Making Plans in Pencil

Do you know the power of a well-timed pause? What if a moment of delay could save a life or transform your own path? In this sermon, we explore the value of intentional pauses in our lives and how they can lead us to greater obedience and purpose.

12 - (Philippians 2:25–30) The Gambler

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to sit next to a 300-pound pig on an airplane? It happened once—a pig traveling in first class as someone's "therapeutic companion." You can guess how well that turned out. As the pig panicked, passengers scrambled, and chaos took over the cabin. This story serves as a vivid reminder that pride can be just as disruptive—even when it seems justified.
