What Only Jesus Can Do

Mark 1:7c-8
“…The strap of whose sandals I am unworthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Which is greater: To give birth to a baby or to create humankind? To plant a seed or to speak a tree into existence? To preach about heaven or to bring heaven down to earth? The fact is obvious: There is an insurmountable distinction between finite creatures and an infinite Creator. All of Israel’s greatest prophets from David to Isaiah to Jeremiah knew that while they could give us a fresh word from God, only God could give us the Word Himself. So, as John the Baptizer compares the work of his own hands to the work of God’s hands, he comes to the honest and emphatic conclusion: “I am unworthy!” Have you come to that conclusion as well?

Further Reflection

Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 40:7c-8
