Watchmen

Isaiah 21:6 & 8

For thus the Lord said to me: “Go, set a watchman; let him announce what he sees.” … Then he who saw cried out: “Upon a watchtower
I stand, O Lord, continually by day, and at my post I am stationed whole nights.”

John Stuart Mill famously argued that “bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing,” but he forgot that bad men first succeed when good men fail to see the evil at all. I fear we as believers sometimes hold the misconception that to keep ourselves unstained by the world we need to keep ourselves uninformed, but that isn’t Christ’s example. His goodness wasn’t marked by ignorance, but by incarnation—and that’s a world of difference. Think back on God’s commission in Isaiah 1:17: “Seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.” Heaven confronts hell head-on. He doesn’t turn His face away; He sets His face as a flint, condemning the wolves while laying down His life for the sheep.

So Christian, as His ambassador, don’t underestimate the world of good you can do today in this world of evil. Be vigilant! Watch out! Speak up! For thus the Lord said to you.
