The Heart of the Story

Isaiah 27:1

In that day the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Critics of Christianity view this scene backwards, as though they’re looking through a telescope from the wrong end. They read it as a figment of man’s imagination rather than God’s. Listen, friend: God’s Word is the pulse of life and literature. Have you pondered that recently? His gospel isn’t just the longing we feel deep in our souls, it’s the spell that permeates our greatest stories, the thread from which all our tales are spun. In fact, we can think of our lives as little fictions that suddenly burst onto the pages of existence by a mere breath from His mouth. So next time you read of a brave knight killing a dragon or an unsung hero slaying a giant or a prince rescuing a princess, feel in the conflict and the victory the story of your own redemption.

I know it sounds cliché, and it might be hard to imagine, but your life today really can be as epic as Isaiah 27:1. Hold fast God’s faithful Word, wield His truth with courage, and send that slithery serpent back to the shadows!
