Isaiah 7:5-6a & 7a & 9b
Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it …” thus says the Lord God: … “If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.”
Part of the reason I’m drawn to the Book of Isaiah is because of the way God tucks universal, timeless truths in the middle of particularized, time-stamped prophecies. Think about it, friend: Ephraim and Remaliah don’t pose any threat to your life today, do they? In fact, the enemies facing you today aren't beating on your door with swords and spears, and you probably couldn't even point them out in a line-up. Rather, they’re invisible, hidden, covert, preferring the shadows to out-in-the open fields of battle. But therein lies the point. While the enemies change with time, and while their tactics evolve like viruses, our defense remains the same: the just shall live by faith.
Today, we won’t be strong in character or gracious in spirit or loving in service or valiant in witness if we aren’t first and foremost firm in faith. So go to the Lord right now, give Him all your trust for the day ahead, and overcome your fears before they come knocking.
