Recount Your Blessings

Recount Your Blessings

Isaiah 63:7a

I will recount the steadfast love of the LORD, the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has granted us.

My son Micah is leaving the ‘ignorance is bliss’ phase of faith and crossing into that harder road marked by doubts, and it’s been difficult to watch. Recently, he cried for twenty minutes over the fact that he had prayed for God to wake him up before his alarm, but, instead, God woke him up after; and although he clearly needed the extra sleep, he was inconsolable, stung by the thought that God hadn’t answered his prayer. I could read the words in the lines of his face clearer than I’ve ever read them on a page, “Father, why have you forsaken me?”, and, in that moment, he looked more like me than ever before—more like the patriarch Jacob too: a boy wrestling with a providence that’s too big to pin down.

But Christian, remember: an unanswered prayer is not a reality. It’s just a perception that masks the absolute reality of God’s steadfast love toward you. So, sit with Lord for a moment today, recount His wondrous works in your life, and let the light of His countenance drown out the lies of the devil.
