Miracles in the Making
Isaiah 54:1
“Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married,” says the LORD.
Growing up, my grandfather would often say to us grandkids, “don’t doubt in darkness what God has shown you in the light,” and that little proverb has come back to mind often over the years. I’m reminded of it as soon as I read Isaiah’s figurative imperative here in Isaiah 54:1 to a barren woman, effectively calling her to rejoice in a soon-coming miracle that she has no proof of beyond God’s Word. I wonder, friend: how often do we praise the Lord only when the harvest is full and the rains are pouring and the flowers are blooming? Do we ever rejoice even when the days are dry, and the nights are cloudless, and there isn’t a mustard seed-sized speck of growth in sight?
Right now, right where you are, sing! Whether you’re wounded or lonely or jobless or sickly or doubtful or despairing, cry aloud to the Lord. Let His promises for your future inspire a song for the present.
