Home in the Hills

Isaiah 32:18
My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you go? For me, I wouldn’t pick a big city. Even when I lived in Europe and worked on a degree in Ancient History, I never stimulated my research by hopping on a train and visiting Athens or Rome (though I probably should have). I spent months studying Julius Caesar and Constantine from the quiet hillsides of South Wales, surrounded by sheep rather than towers, and illumined by the undiluted sun rather than the glowing lights of Main Street. Everyone’s different, I know; and there’s beauty in all sort of landscapes; but the high country’s where I feel most inspired, most at peace within myself, and most restful. That’s why I love Isaiah’s words in Isaiah 55:12: “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

Friend, even if you don’t pine for the hills today like I do, join them in rejoicing. And remember that the peace and security and rest your soul craves most is already yours in Christ Jesus.
