Be Thou My Vision

Isaiah 59:10a

We grope for the wall like the blind; we grope like those who have no eyes.

I remember watching a remarkable documentary about a young boy who had to have his eyes removed due to cancer, but who’s resilient mother refused to call him blind. Instead, she taught him that losing his eyes was just an opportunity to see life differently, and so he did. First, he taught himself how to click along the sidewalk with a walking staff, mapping out the shapes and movements of objects through echolocation. Eventually, he didn’t even need the staff at all, because he learned to click with his tongue and read the soundwaves that bounced back to such great effect that he could ride a bike, rollerblade, and play basketball on a busy city street without fear. In fact, He seemed to see things that people who’d become over-reliant on their eyesight couldn’t.

Christian, shouldn’t that be a picture of us in this world of rebelliousness? Instead of mourning the tragedy of life in the darkness, we can embrace it with courage. And instead of fumbling back and forth from day to day, we can walk upright, led by the soundwaves of our Savior’s steps, and see through His inner light what others can’t.
