For Where Your Treasure Is

Mark 8:36
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”

I doubt you’ve ever stopped to imagine what it would actually be like to gain the entire world. You’ve probably craved a beach house in Hawaii; but have you considered owning the Pacific Ocean? You may have envied a cabin getaway on the Blue Ridge Parkway; but have you dreamed of owning the mountains themselves? Listen to Jesus: The whole world is pocket change in comparison to the eternal value of your own soul. What a profound truth. No wonder missionary Jim Elliot, before dying a martyr’s death, wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Friend, if your definition of profit today is not Jesus Christ, you’re selling yourself eternally short.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
