Empty Minds, Empty Stomachs

Isaiah 44:20
He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

Common sense isn’t so common anymore, is it? Like a hunted animal on the verge of extinction, it’s becoming as rare as it is precious. Pseudo-science books paint a fiction of human progress, saying that eons and eons ago men were feral, rudimentary creatures who have now developed into rocket scientists and marine biologists and chemical engineers; but staring through the looking glass of Isaiah 44 tells us the harder truth. Without Christ, we’ve always been cavemen. Ancient or modern, we’re beastly and stiff-necked and witless when left to ourselves. It doesn’t matter if we live in a wilderness or Beverly Hills. It makes no difference if we write on cavern walls or in Wall Street Journals. It means nothing if we dine in jungles or five-star restaurants. We’re commonly lost and hungry and delusional because we’re equally fallen.

Christian, I urge you: to those feeding on ashes, give them the bread of Heaven. To those lost in their delusions, show them the logos of God. To those clinging to a lie, take them by the hand and lead them toward the truth.
