Divine Correction
John 11:11b He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”
Jesus uses Lazarus’ death as a means of poetically pulling back the curtain of heaven, but His disciples completely miss the lesson. In fact, they actually correct Jesus by effectively saying, “Master, studies have shown that sleep is good for a person; let’s leave him be.” Not only are they presuming to teach the very One who created sleep cycles in the first place, but they are making the all-too-common mistake of missing the spiritual truths behind physical symbols. Don’t miss that. Jesus offers them a poetic reminder that death has no lasting power over God’s people, but instead of taking a moment to reflect on His words, they immediately correct Him.
Friend, as you sit at the feet of Jesus today, make sure your listening leads to reflecting and your reflecting leads to marveling. Let God do the correcting.
