Deaf Ears

Genesis 39:7-9

And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes at Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, … “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”

The Bible doesn’t tell us how Potiphar’s wife answered Joseph’s question here, but I’ve got a pretty good hunch as to how the devil did. “Joseph—this is a sign of God’s favor! This woman is a prize for your suffering! You’ve gone through hell, man—you deserve this!” But like Jesus in the wilderness, Joseph doesn’t budge. Next try: “Joseph, that tingle in your chest when she walks into the room—the way she makes you feel; it’s natural! It’s God-made! There’s nothing wrong with it!” But Joseph is steadfast. Third try: “Joseph, stop being a prude! Look at the pain in her eyes! Stop making this all about you, man! Her husband’s always gone; she needs someone to care for her; have some heart!” Still no movement. Last try: “Joseph, you think Potiphar respects you? You think you’re in charge? Fool! He’s got you doing all his chores while he parties with Pharaoh! Be the boss! Be the man! Carpe diem, baby!”

Friend, remember: the devil’s words are always powerless against a steadfast heart.
