Choir Practice

Psalm 19:1-2

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

Today, as I write this, I’m in the middle of a humid North Carolina summer, though there’s been a little reprieve in the heat as the temperature outside is only 89°—a cold front for us! But the humidity outside is about 500 percent, meaning that all the ponds and lakes are boiling, and all the fish are dead, and all the frogs are hopping around our houses, and it’s a scene from a live-action Moses film. Okay, that’s not exactly true, but sometimes it feels that way. I’ve been trying the past couple of weeks to get my kids to come outside and play with me—basketball, soccer, anything—but they last about five minutes before complaining of the heat and heading back in. Our mountain trip next week can’t come soon enough.

But it’s the middle of autumn for you right now and perhaps where you are it’s 59° outside, and there’s a clear, crisp, breeze in the air, and the effervescence of Heaven is bubbling up through all of nature, and the trees are ablaze with orange, red, and yellow hues, and there’s a hint of smoke in your nostrils from a campfire you shared with friends last night, and you’re eating a pumpkin muffin to go along with your morning cup of joe, and the aroma of an apple-cinnamon candle greeted you when you got out of bed this morning. Or perhaps you’re rolling your eyes as you read all this, because your week’s been shrouded in rainstorms and illnesses and flat tires and it hasn’t at all been the picturesque postcard of autumn you’d imagined. Well, your day, like my day, sunny or rainy, hot or cold, smoggy or crisp, is a day murmuring with the language of God. Even as you read this, precious seconds are going by, moving by the breath of the Spirit of God, and divine outpourings are happening all around you, and you’re surrounded by the speech and knowledge and revelations of your Savior if you only have eyes to see and ears to hear them.

Friend, regardless of what the skies over your head look like right now, rejoice! Listen to the choir singing all around you and join in!
