Be Reasonable

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

While enlightenments and renaissances and scientific revolutions have caused many outside the walls of the church to over-esteem human reason, movements within the Church have often made the opposite mistake of demeaning it. That’s why I appreciate the ESV translation here of Isaiah 1:18. It’s as if God effectively says—“Men: I gave you the singular ability to reason, so be reasonable!” See, just as a caterpillar undergoes the metamorphosis of the cocoon and comes out a new creation, so, too, reason undergoes the metamorphosis of faith and comes out transfigured. No longer bound to the fleeting pleasures of life; no longer plodding along through earthy affections, the rational believer is able to soar with new wings, see with new eyes, and live with divine purpose.

Those who are being transformed through faith, renewed by the Love of Christ, and sanctified by The Spirit should be the most reasonable people of all, right? May that be true of us today.
