A Knock Outside

A Knock Outside

Genesis 41:1-2

After two whole years, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile, and behold, there came up out of the Nile seven cows, attractive and plump, and they fed in the reed grass.

730 days is a long time to be stuck in a dungeon for a crime you didn’t commit. At what point did Joseph stop watching the door for a sign of the cupbearer? At what point did he stop checking the window every time he heard commotion outside? Maybe he marked each passing day on his cell wall, but by day 365 he’d run out of room. Yet, Joseph’s resilient, right? If anyone can keep his chin up in such an awful situation, it’s him. But maybe by day 600, he gives up hope of ever being rescued. By day 730, life’s just a dark, dank, unrelenting merry-go-round of drudgery. But then an entourage shows up outside the gate. Then a shuffle of footsteps heads toward his door. Then a two-year-long silence is broken by a voice calling out, “Joseph, get up— Pharaoh’s summoned you!” and a burned-out faith bursts into flame once more.

Friend, God doesn’t leave His children in the dark for good. So keep lifting your hands in prayer! And keep watching the door.
