A Great Commandment

Isaiah 2:17-18

“And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day. And the idols shall utterly pass away.”

What’s the very first, foundational commandment God etches into stone in Exodus 20:3? “You shall have no other gods before me.” And the second? “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God.” See, everything that comes next, from lying to stealing to coveting to murdering to demeaning the Sabbath, is just a different form of idolatry: a different way to cherish something else above God. That’s why Jesus sums up the entire Law with two commands: “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.” So why do we keep treating that as a regulation rather than a reward? Why do we keep stumbling through the shadows of earthly lusts when we’re invited to walk in the light of His countenance?

Christian, make Isaiah 2:18 the vision for your day ahead and not just a vision for the future. Exalt God right now with your whole heart and throw away the idols.
