A Final Doxology

Psalm 150:6

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

There—that’s it: the very last lyric in the divine hymnal called Psalms. And it’s a commission to us today, friend, because now it’s our turn to worship. Look at that empty space in your Bible that falls between the period at the end of verse six and that bold title PROVERBS on the next page. That empty symbolizes your life right now. That’s your space to fill. What poetic lines of your own will you add to the gospel choir? What instruments will you bring to the symphony? Today is the day to pick up an instrument and sing a song. Today is the day to write new poetry or write a story or write a letter to someone in need. Today is the day to get out those paintbrushes and canvases that have been gathering dust in your garage and paint new pictures. Today is the day to invite a neighbor or a co-worker over for dinner and cook that special recipe you’ve been holding off on. Today is the day to mentor that younger disciple who is struggling to connect with others but who has come to you for help. Today is the day to tell someone else the good news of what Christ has done for you—whether it’s the clerk at the grocery store or the beggar on the side of the road or the teammate on your pickleball team. Today is the day to pour all the overflow of wisdom that God has granted you into the cup of someone in need of it. Today is the day to call your local church and join a carpentry ministry or start one, or lead a special needs ministry, or get a meal-train going for the young couple who just had a miscarriage or lead a sports outreach camp for the community. Oh, let every breath in you praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Jude 1:25 says this: “To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” So, friend, let’s go out of breath today in our worship as we wave goodbye to an old year and usher in a new one.
