“The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers, that struck the peoples with… unceasing blows, that ruled the nations in anger with unrelenting persecution.”
How has the Lord broken the staff of the wicked? By overcoming the lies of Pharisees with the gospel of grace. How has He crushed the scepter of rulers? By disarming the power of death and the devil through His glorious Passion. How has He broken the whip that struck people with unceasing blows? By absorbing those stripes in His own body and eclipsing hell’s fury with divine fortitude. How has He stopped the arms that ruled the nations with unrelenting persecution? By spreading His arms at Calvary and overruling men’s atrocities with divine pardon. As Isaiah later writes in Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
See, Christian, everything you fear today, all those forces of darkness that seem so vast and powerful, have already struck the Rock of Ages and been irreversibly broken. So rise up in victory! Live today as if Isaiah 14:5-6 has already been fulfilled—because it has!
